We’re back for another short but sweet solo episode on this crazy Tuesday evening, and by crazy Tuesday evening, I mean that I am sitting in my bed with my cat, Starbucks coffee, and a lot of marketing books. I want to talk about something that I feel like I’m seeing chatted about, and I don’t always love the way it is being portrayed, so I want to talk about it from my perspective. There’s this concept in the spiritual entrepreneurial community about flow.
Sometimes I think that alignment and flow in business are confused with things being easy, things “feeling good.” We have to kind of dive through the nuances of that, especially if you are reading this. You are a new entrepreneur, you are new coach, a new business owner, you’re launching something new in your business, and it requires a lot of work and a lot of effort and a lot of energy. When we are creating a new business, if you are a coach and you are launching a new coaching practice, it will take a lot of time and a lot of effort, and a lot of energy. Just because something is taking a lot of time, effort and energy does not mean that it’s not aligned if it’s hard. I think that sometimes we are told, or we think that if it is spiritually in alignment, it should just be simple, which has led me to the thought process of “Can we be in flow while we are hustling?” and I’ve been asking this question to a lot of different people. I’ve been asking this question to spiritual men who are really successful entrepreneurs and deeply spiritual individuals.
I was talking to one man about it, and we were talking about “Can you be in flow and hustle at the same time?” and this guy I’ve been dating is super successful, such a beautiful spiritual human, but also very successful from a worldly standpoint. He’s in a huge push in his business right now, and he’s working his ass off so much because of what’s going on in his business. And so, I said to him. “Do you think you can have flow and hustle at the same time?” He said that he thinks we have flow in different areas in our life, we have flow in our spiritual life, we flow in our health and nutrition, we have flow in our connection with other people, we have flow in our creativity… For himself, he can maintain flow in the most important areas of life that help basically feed the hustle. So his spiritual life is a non-negotiable to keep inflow. His daily practices of meditation and journaling and quiet time early in the morning– that’s non-negotiable. His health flow, the way he eats, moving his body and exercising, taking cold showers and cold plunging… these are all non-negotiables, and he stays inflow because when his body and spirit are in alignment, it allows him to do what he needs to be doing in the business. But he also said there are other areas of this life right now where he’s not in flow like normal. Like his connection with other people, spending time with other people, his flow in his super creative space. He is creative in the business he’s creating, but he’s not creative in the other ways he enjoys being creative. I thought that was a pretty interesting perspective. He’s still working so much, and he’s tired, it’s hard doing a lot of things, but he’s maintaining flow in different areas.
I spoke to another man who is a successful entrepreneur, and he believes that you can have flow and hustle simultaneously because we flow through the polarities. From the hustle to the feminine, we flow from the masculine to the feminine, and I think both perspectives are pretty similar. They’re just being spoken out in a different way. The reason why I wanted to this is that if you are building a business right now that you are excited about, like me, I am building businesses right now that I’m excited about. Still, I am hitting roadblocks and dealing with things that are really hard in my business, and I have to work a lot. I’m having to be on my bed on my laptop late at night getting things done that must get done. Just because you’re being asked to make the business profitable and successful, it doesn’t mean that the business is not aligned. It just means that you are in a season of working really, really, hard, and the challenge is to find areas in your life to maintain well.
The first guy I told you about, I really agree with him. You must see the areas in your life that are your non-negotiable areas and try your best to maintain flow in those areas. Your spiritual work and the container of your body works with nutrition and movement, so those are non-negotiable. For me, I have to be meditating and journaling, and spending a little bit of quiet time before I launch into my day. I have to be working out, going to the gym, getting on to my peloton, and moving my body. The way I feel my body is so important. The way I hydrate my body? Super important. Intermittent fasting is something that helped me so much with my energy… that’s super important. When you’re in the hustle where you’re in the growth phase and the building phase of a business, you still have to seek areas of your life that are most important and find some semblance of flow. It’s not always easy but owning a business is not easy. And if you thought it was going to be easy, I think you’re on the wrong business.
And I say this with so much love as I’m sitting in my bed having this dialogue with you guys. I love you, and I hope this is helpful.
