We are going to do something a little bit different on the podcast than I have done before. So just a little bit of backstory. Something that I teach a lot / constantly to my coaching clients is the benefits of creating content, putting ourselves out there in the world, and really creating a brand. Because until we do that, nobody knows who the fuck we are. We’re just another person in the world who is selling a service or selling a product. And until we give people a chance to really get to know us. They’re not going to like us, trust us, want to buy from us, want to work with us. And so content and connection to people through content on our social media platforms is really the most powerful way to connect with the people that we want to work with. And we want to serve in this lifetime. And so one of the things I tell my clients is daily content creation and putting yourself out there on social media. And for me when I launched my business a couple of years ago, I was constantly posting on social media showing up on other people’s podcasts before I had a podcast. And it was great. But what happened was my referral zone got really big. I started having a lot of clients come in and work really started to flow. So I wasn’t posting and showing up as much as I have in the past. And so as both of my businesses are growing and scaling, I decided that I want to start showing up more and more on the podcast and on social media. And so I have personally challenged myself that for the next 30 days minimum. I’m going to show up every single day on social media. And I hate saying this because it makes it real and I feel held accountable. I want to create mini-podcast episodes every day for the next 30 days. Short, sweet bite-size five to 10-minute podcasts where I’m sharing with you guys something that I’m thinking about, praying on, meditating on, whether it’s in business, my spiritual life, my relationships, whatever. So, here we are May 2nd, 2021. Day one of the 30-day content challenge.
So the thing that I have been thinking about a lot in the online world of coaching is if you look around social media, you will see an abundance of coaches who love to talk about how easy it is if you follow their system to make $10,000 a month in your coaching business regularly. And I have a lot of problems with that. Because I don’t think when you’re launching your coaching business, it is necessarily easy to hit that target very quickly. I think some people do it. Absolutely. I didn’t hit that target quickly in my business. And that’s why I will proclaim to teach people to do it quickly. It’s simple. The tactics that we use to get there are simple, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen overnight. And I also question a lot of the credibility of the coaches who are saying that, because I know a lot of them, and there’s no way that they’re consistently making 10 grand a month in their coaching practices, every single month, there’s one thing to have months, where you make 10, 20, 30, 40,50 grand because of the launch or because of something that you’re selling, right? I have had months like that, however, to say that they’re consistently doing it, I have questions about integrity and people being honest. I guess the point of this rant is to say one; it is possible to be making ten grand a month in your coaching business. And it is possible but to be doing that, maybe quicker than somebody else is doing it.
However, there are a couple of different things to consider. One of those things is, you know, some of the coaches I know, that are doing that and saying that and teaching that have pretty intense business backgrounds, like this is not their first rodeo in creating a business. And so I think they need to be honest about that fact about the fact that like, you know, for me, for example, I have been very profitable in my business, and I am in the second year of a full-time business. Well, that standard of me being very profitable in my business isn’t necessarily fair for somebody else to compare themselves to me because I have such a different, unique background, working with businesses as an attorney, understanding business systems and structures in a way that maybe somebody else doesn’t. I share this with you because we need to think about the source of the success because often we compare ourselves, and we think we should be somewhere faster. And it takes time. I give the metric three years, at least three years of consistently showing up, will profitability. Think three years is a great metric, not that you’re not going to be making money for three years. But to be really profitable, and really making multiple, six figures. It takes a couple of years to get into the groove to figure out how you show up to build your audience to grow your brand to figure out the products and services you want to offer. And which ones convert well with your target audience. I think it takes time, effort, energy, and consistency. And so if you’re somebody who is just starting, there are so many coaches who launched their coaching business in the pandemic time because we had downtime, and people went back and got certifications and being a coach. And this is your first go-around at entrepreneurship, like give yourself some grace and some time—even two years of being profitable in my business as an entrepreneur. I had a couple of years before this where I had started other entrepreneurial ventures. I had played with network marketing, and I had done other things as an entrepreneur before these two years. So I’ve really been playing with entrepreneurship for about five years. At this point, I’m there; I’m going to be 35. I started around 30. So give yourself grace. And also, just be cautious of the claims that people put out on the internet to say, I’m gonna teach you how to make, you know, ten grand with ease.
That’s like I always say, the systems that get us there. I think they’re pretty simple. I don’t think it’s rocket science. It’s just showing up and doing it consistently. Being willing to fail, make mistakes, course-correct as we go along, and never stopping. If you never stop and relentlessly pursue this business, you’re building this coaching practice that you’re seeking to put out to the world. I just I, you can’t help but be successful to some degree.
I also think we need to be honest with ourselves about the money we want to make in our business. So often, we hear people saying, you know, I wouldn’t make a million dollars in my business, I wouldn’t make more than a million dollars. And I’m not shitting on that because I want to bring in a massive amount of abundance into my business as well. But Gary Vee talks about this all the time. He was like, he says, like, why is 1 million? The number like, why is 1 million, the number that we’re seeking, scientifically, and statistically $1 million, will not make you happier than a lower amount. I can’t remember where I read it or what I listened to. But somebody said, I know I’m a great researcher, guys. Somebody said that there was a study done. And once people’s basic life necessities were covered, like food, rent, health care, all that stuff, once our basic bills are covered, people are no happier, making money above that threshold amount. So, for example, say your monthly bills were five grand, and you were making five grand a month, if you started making ten grand a month, according to this study, you’re not any happier with the ten grand than you were with the five grand. And that’s so interesting to think about. I look at my own business as my business has grown. And you know, like most people, I get into that phase where I get to that next place, I’ll be happier. When I get to that next space, I’ll be happier, and I’ll enjoy my life. And I get sucked into those moments too. And what I have seen is as my business has grown, I’m very happy in my life, I love my life, I love what I get to do. I’m so proud of myself for what I’m creating. However, I am not happier now than I was when I made less money a year ago. My happiness and my fulfillment are pretty much the same. And so when you’re thinking about how you want to be profitable in your coaching business, Dream really fucking big, have big dreams, have big goals, push yourself, but also don’t fall into the trap that you won’t be happy unless you make that amount of money. You won’t be happy unless you hit that seven-figure income. Will it be amazing? Will it be beautiful? Will it be fucking awesome? Should you be proud of yourself? Yes, but don’t fall into the trap that will make you happier. Because you will be just as happy when your needs are met, as when you’re making that much more money.
So I am very skeptical when people are like I’ll teach you how to make this amount. I’ll teach you how to make that amount because there are so many different variables both in what you’re offering as a coach and the person teaching you (what their background is). So that’s my little business rant of the day. Have some healthy skepticism guys.
