Today we are talking about hiring an assistant and what you need to know in your business when you decide that you want to do that. Today’s an interesting morning, I normally record these podcast episodes at like seven o’clock in the morning. It is 10 am here in Arizona and I realized oh shit, I didn’t record a podcast episode yet. And I realized like when we commit to doing something that’s like this, 30 days of whatever. This is when the challenge starts to happen when we have to keep consistently showing up. Because this is when I think we’re really forming that new habit and pattern of behavior, right? And so for me, I’m seeing it, I’m like, oh, oh shit, okay, I got a podcast to record. And then it’s like, what am I going to talk about. And I think that’s something a lot of us struggle within our businesses because it’s like content is the way. So this is a form of content. A podcast, content is the way that we connect with our ideal clients, our target audience, our community. But we get in our heads often about what to show up and talk about. But I think the most important thing is showing up consistently, what to talk about and when to talk about it will come with time. But building that consistency of showing up and developing that muscle of showing up daily and regularly is huge. So here I am. 10 minutes ago, I had no idea what I was going to talk about. But then I thought about what’s going on in my life in my business. And the perfect great thing for me to talk about right now is how do you begin the process of hiring. So we often need to hire in our business sooner than we think we need to. My friend Jackie Serviss always says we hire in our business for where we want to be in a year, not where we’re at right now. And oftentimes when we’re hiring our very first assistant in business, it can feel really overwhelming because we do everything ourselves, you as the entrepreneur, you are the doer, you do everything, and figuring out what you do, because you just do it on autopilot, you figured things out, you’ve done one thing after the other, you do everything. And so figuring out how to tell somebody what to do and how to do it like you do is a challenge. It can be challenging teaching somebody how to do something because the first step of that is figuring out your own system, method, and process to then teach that human to do.
So when you’re first starting to think about hiring an assistant, I want you to spend some time and think about what is my zone of excellence. What is the thing in my business that I do better than anyone else? What is my special sauce, and then also, what are the things that bring me so much joy, and then what is everything else in my business? So I periodically make this comprehensive list to kind of check-in and see where I’m at. So you start there, you start with looking at that and thinking about that, then the next thing you do is you pick a starting point for me, it was my podcast, I love recording episodes, but everything to produce that episode and get it out to the world. I don’t love it However, for this “30 days of podcasting”, I have come up with a hack. So that’s for another time. But you make a list of the things that don’t bring you joy, and then you start with one. So for me, I started with my podcast. And then I sat down and I thought through every single step that I used to do to bring my podcast to the world in detail. So much detail. And then I brought in my first assistant, to do those things for me. And that’s where you start, you start with one task. You don’t start with “I’m going to hand over my whole business”, you start with “what can I have somebody do for me?”, maybe two hours a week, eight hours a month that I can pay, that will relieve a little bit of tension. And then you move to the next thing after you get comfortable with that you move to the next thing. And you give them more hours and you give them more responsibility. One, this allows you if you’re scared of hiring and paying somebody as you’re bringing money into the business, it allows it to be a slower process. It allows you to develop a relationship of trust with someone as you are developing a connection with them. And it seems to flow really easily. That’s what I’ve been doing in my business with each thing and it’s starting with Who are you What’s your zone of excellence? What do you love to do and then what do you not like to do and then take the “not like to-do list” and think about “which one do I want to start with?” and then you go from there.
So that is how I hired my first assistant and that’s she started with my podcast and we moved forward from there. I hope this was helpful. I will definitely do some more in-depth episodes on hiring and firing and all of the fun stuff that goes along with being a business owner. With that, hope you guys have a beautiful day.
