So this is an episode I don’t even know what number it is. But if you’ve been following along, I am in my 30 day podcast challenge where every day for 30 days, I am creating a podcast because content and creating new valuable content is the lifeblood of any business. And so I’ve decided to really, really, really stick to this. Today is Saturday, and one of my best friends, Jessica Burgio is in town. And I must tell you a podcast could have almost not happened today because it’s in the afternoon. We’ve had drinks, we’ve had snacks, we went to Target like it has happened today, right? All the things all day and I could have been like, you know what? No, there’s no time. But the thing that this challenge has taught me is that there’s always five minutes to do a quickie little podcast.
Regina: So today Jess and I are going to focus on just some little nuggets of what you should be considering when you’re hiring your business. And so for me, I’m doing more hiring from a virtual standpoint, Jess is doing that as well in her business. But she has years of hiring and building a brick-and-mortar business. So we figured why don’t we hop in. I’ve been talking about hiring lately and how to hire an assistant. So some little nuggets about how to be hiring in your businesses.
Jess: I love it. Yeah, and this is key. And I wish somebody would have shared with me some good tips on hiring earlier on. Because I think sometimes we know what we need in our business. We know what we’d like to not be doing or things that would make it easier to get done with the day-to-day stuff. But finding someone that can speak your voice that can walk with you, move with you and isn’t more in your way, and having you do more work than less work. I do think everyone can be trained but at some level, you have to find someone who can match you energetically.
Regina: Totally. The thing that I’ve realized in hiring for my businesses is I need somebody who is in alignment with the vision and wants to grow with the business, like having that person who doesn’t want to be me, but once to help me in my business to grow my business. I couldn’t agree more. So that’s something that I’ve been thinking a lot about when I first started thinking about hiring in my business. One of the first quick things I realized is like my business and my brand, I am front of show, like it is what I am building for me. And when I started to interview girls, when I started thinking about hiring a year ago, I realized that these were girls who had similar dreams of as nine to like, be the coach, be the brand, right. And those aren’t the people that make good assistants for your business.
Jess: I would say, someone early on who’s wanting to shadow you and wanting to learn and grow could be a good asset because they are trying to mirror you and learn everything in a way that you’re doing it. So you could find some alignment in that, at least in the brick and mortar because I have 20 years behind the chair as a hairdresser, just for a backstory with me. And usually, an assistant had to be licensed. So then therefore they were looking to step into the same shoes you were doing. But for our business, no, I think as an assistant, you need an assistant in our virtual world, and you need to be able to do the things you don’t necessarily want to do. Yeah, so if they want to be you, per se, and do what you’re doing, that’s probably not going to be in alignment, they’re probably going to have the same zone of genius as you. They’re not going to be able to do all the other things. And it’s not to say that you can’t do those things. But it’s like who wants to be doing those things, there’s plenty of people who don’t want to be front of the house, who want to be in the back supporting. And it’s so imperative to find people who can play those supporting roles in your business. Because even as a coach, even as the, you know, top dog person, the person in charge, we want some sounding boards from our people, you want them to be part of your team and your culture, and almost work with you, not just for you.
Regina: And you want them to be different from you. But that’s why what you just said about a sounding board, like you want somebody who you can check ideas with, and they give feedback like this is a good idea. Or maybe this is a great idea, you know, and something else that just said that I think is really important when we’re thinking about hiring in our business, you know, think about your zone of excellence, what is this, like your special sauce, what is the thing in the business that you are so good at, and then what is what’s all the other stuff that’s taking a lot of time that you don’t love that’s not in your zone of genius. And those are the things that have people come in and assist you with. So you can stay in your zone of excellence is really what I’m looking for is I’m hiring in my businesses, and I’m growing them.
Jess: Right, because from my perspective, watching you, you should be strictly coaching and creating content, right. And the supporting role should be doing all of the other things. So whatever it is, in your business that you’re doing, you may not be ready to hire quite yet. But there’s a long list of things that you have to do day to day to make the needle move to keep the momentum going in your business to get more clients, to give the best client experience, and when you are trying to do every single thing. You know, it’s like what is it? You’re good at some things but the master of none.
Regina: Exactly. Jack of all trades, master of none, right?
Jess: When you’re starting out, and you only have a couple of clients, you can handle all of that you can onboard, you can invoice, you can do all the things. But when you get to a point where you’re getting some momentum in your business, and there are things that Chris Harder always says don’t bring you joy and aren’t producing income, it’s time to hire those out and delegate. So if you can hire somebody, at a price point that is less than what you are charging an hour to fill that spot, that’s when you know it’s time. So if you let’s just say for simple math, you charge $100 an hour for your service, whatever that may be, whether it’s a haircut, for me an hour behind the chair, or coaching with you, if you can hire someone to do something that would normally take you that same amount of time and pay them $15 $20 an hour to do that, you are making money because then that allows for you to have more clients in them to get the other stuff done. And it’s keeping you, like she said, in your zone of genius to where you can focus on coaching or creating content, whatever that looks like, rather than going through emails responding to all the little knick-knacks and whatnot. So you know, spending the time to train the right people in your business is just as important as it is, you know, finding clients that are in alignment with who you want to work with.
Regina: Something that one of our best girlfriends, Jackie Serviss always says and she’s the queen of hiring. She always says you hire for where you want your business to be in a year, you don’t necessarily hire for where your business is right now. Because if your goal is to grow and expand the business, where do you want to be in a year? And what do you need? Or who do you need on your team to get to that place? And so when you’re starting to hire I know like a lot of early entrepreneurs and coaches listen to the podcast. You don’t have to hire everything out right away. Right? Like, pick one task that you’re going to start with that maybe will take somebody a couple of hours a week to do right and start there, start somewhere.
Jess: So what does that look like for you? Where were you at when you were like okay, I need some help. Like there are things that just dropping the ball here this isn’t getting done as it should or you’re staying up way too late trying to you know, do all the little things.
Regina: My podcast. I love recording episodes. But what was happening was I would put episodes out on Tuesdays and Tuesday night it would be midnight and I would be editing and doing everything because I was procrastinating because I hated it so much. All the bullshit that goes into getting the podcast out to the world. Totally. So my, my, my assistant who I have now my first assistant, Nicole, I hired for a particular task. To do the editing, to put it out to the world, to send the email to my list, to edit the graphics to email the guests. And that, you know, what took takes her one hour to do a week, it was taking me so long to do because I was fucking procrastinating because I was like,” I hate this!”. And it was also confusing because it was making me think I hated podcasting, which I love to do. I just hated everything else.
Jess: And that’s the thing about coaching, I think people get into the coaching industry. And they think the same exact thing. The same thing happens. They think I don’t know if coaching is for me, because of all this other back-end stuff. But if your zone is literally sitting face to face, or phone to phone, or zoom to zoom with somebody, helping them work on strategizing, hold them accountable in the business life sense. That is where you should be, you should not be, you know, probably writing content or creating emails or figuring out your funnel or like any of that other stuff. And that’s why there’s so many done for you services that are popping up now because they see such a need to fill this. So it is just as important to, build a great team around you, as it is to, do anything else,
Regina: Something that I’ve been doing for people. So I do 90 minute deep dives with people where I go into their businesses, and I work with them just for 90 minutes. If you’re somebody who’s thinking about hiring, and you don’t know exactly where to start, or you know, hey, I want to delegate my podcast, but I don’t even know what tasks I need to delegate to somebody so that I can hire them in 90 minute deep dives. I help people figure out what they need to delegate. How are you going to delegate? What are the steps of action and then I can actually help you find the person that you’re looking for, to fill that position. So if that’s something you’re interested in or need help with, go to my website, www.reginalawrence.com, and click on work with me. And there’s a tab for my 90 minute deep dives. I think a lot of times people want to hire, but they’re like, I don’t know what somebody could even do. Or like in theory, I know I want these things done. But I don’t even know the steps of action that I’m doing to teach somebody else how to do it.
Jess: And I think a lot of people get caught up on the cost of hiring too. Like what is it gonna look like to commit to paying somebody X amount of dollars if your business isn’t consistent just yet. But as Regina said a little while ago, our friend Jackie talks about hiring for where you’re going and where you want to be. So again, if you don’t have clarity on where that is and where you see yourself or even like a revenue goal that you’re trying to hit book a call with Regina get on the 90 minute deep dive because I’ve done one of these with her actually a few times, because my business and everything shifts, as COVID happened as all the things happen. So I’ve had to go back in and not hit the reset. But go back and get real clear on where I’m going and how I’m going to get there. And when you have that clarity, it’s so much easier to commit to having somebody come on board and you will feel so much more confident in those decisions.
Regina: Amen, amen. All right, I hope this was helpful guys. I hope you can take some nuggets away for what you’re looking for when you’re hiring and how to start hiring. As always, I hope you guys have a beautiful day.
